Ah yes, that is what I was looking for. Some old-fashioned fun with some spells, monsters, and wit. It brings me back to my Anita Blake days.
Snarky protagonists can easily go one of two ways. Either they quickly turn into whiny, irritating butt holes, or they have dry sarcasm and self deprecating humour that makes me want to lovingly pat them on the head in reassurance. Harry Dresden, fortunately, belongs to the latter kind of snarky. Even when facing death, he always seems to have a comment of nonchalance or humour that feels so inappropriate that it works.
I have a feeling that if the next books in the series have stronger plots, I'll be a big Dresden Files fan. Given the popularity of the series, I'm optimistic.
