Watchmen

Watchmen is widely considered to be one of the most important and groundbreaking graphic novels of all time. I can see why.

It is an artful and poetic postmodern masterpiece, turning what is often an escapist genre into something that deconstructs pulpy tropes by exploring the fallibility and psychology of superheroes. In Watchmen, superheroes are not symbols of hegemonic, violent masculinity and blind patriotism, but as symptoms of ideology.

I find myself writing this review as though it's a paper. But I can't help it - this novel's pages practically beg to be examined and written about. I've never read anything like this, and it makes me really excited. It breaks the mold of what literature can accomplish, and how literature can represent itself.

I need to read more Alan Moore.
